BLOG: The season of outdoor activities has finally arrived! After spending several months indoors, local 5K races, hikes, and summer sports are finally starting up again. Yet before signing up for new adventures, it is important to have a healthy eating plan in place. After all, food is the fuel you need to reach your exercise goals!
Following a balanced diet is the best way to energize your body. However, when it comes to recovery after exercise, timing and nutrition are everything! The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) recommends consumption of both carbohydrate and protein within thirty minutes of exercise. Carbohydrate is required to replenish energy stores that are used up during exercise, while protein is needed to repair and build new muscle.
Sounds simple. Especially when you consider that the perfect recovery fuel is located at the Stewart’s Shop in your neighborhood. Chocolate milk has been recognized as one of the most effective recovery foods for recreational sports; all due to it’s ideal carbohydrate and protein ratio. Compared to sports drinks, which are made solely of carbohydrates, athletes who drink chocolate milk have reported shorter recovery time, increased endurance, and greater muscle function. Chocolate milk has also been shown to improve rehydration through its natural electrolyte content, including potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Considering the loss of calcium that occurs during intense exercise, chocolate milk can also assist in preventing stress fractures.
Stewart’s chocolate milk is made from their own low-fat milk. This means that the chocolate milk found in your local shop has more protein, calcium, and magnesium than most other brands. Stewart’s milk is fortified with non-fat milk solids, which increases the protein content; and because freshness is guaranteed, Stewart’s milk is not subjected to high processing techniques that remove valuable electrolytes. The low-fat content of Stewart’s chocolate milk also makes it a heart healthy and nutrient dense fuel source.
Exercise can be challenging enough. Make the recovery process simple. Stop into the nearest Stewart’s Shop and grab a cold bottle of their low-fat chocolate milk. The sooner you replace your electrolytes, the faster your body can recover; and nothing is quicker and closer than a pit stop at Stewart’s!
